What Is Geoscience? is a question that comes up in every quest for the meaning of geoscience.

Our article happily answers that.

The Meaning of Geoscience

Geoscience is the scientific study of the Earth, its oceans, atmosphere, ice sheets/glaciers, soils, rivers and lakes. It studies the complex surface, rocky interior, and metallic core with it’s many different natural geologic systems.

This includes many aspects of how living things, including humans, interact with the Earth. Geoscience has many tools and practices of its own but is intimately linked with the biological, chemical, and physical sciences.

Geoscience serves as a means to investigates the past, measures the present, and models the future behavior of our planet. But it also involves the study of other planets, asteroids, and solar systems, both to better understand the Earth and to expand our knowledge of the universe.

Geoscience also includes the study and investigation of Earth’s minerals, soil, water and energy resources: this inculcates how Earth’s natural systems work today, how they operated in the recent and ancient past, and how we expect they may behave in the future. The study of geoscience is relevant to everyone, not geoscientists alone.

Our Earth has been around for more than four billion years so there’s a lot of information to work with. Some geoscientists work in a traditional broad area of Earth science like geology, geophysics, geochemistry and environmental geoscience.

Others practice geoscience in one of many specialized areas, such as volcanology (volcanoes), paleontology (fossils) or geochronology (age-dating rocks); or they work in a new emerging discipline such as medical or forensic geology. It’s important to remember that there are many different types of geoscientists in the world and also, different forms of geoscience practice which helps us better our study of the earth.

The above should clearly clear the air on the question ”what is geoscience?” Let us know your thoughts.
